Dr.
Levi L. Lamborn was a physician and amateur horticulturist and
politician in Alliance, Ohio. A few years after the Civil War, he showed
a carnation to a friend and political opponent named William McKinley.
The red carnation was adopted as Ohio's state flower in 1904 in memory
of President William McKinley, who always wore a red carnation in his
lapel. The
carnation was introduced in 1904. Carnations are grown in greenhouses in
Alliance, the Carnation City, to this day. The carnation is
native to Europe, primarily the Mediterranean region.
